Summary:

Dapagliflozin (Farxiga) became the first SGLT2 inhibitor to face generic competition in 2026, but the savings may be limited if patients and clinicians continue to use empagliflozin (Jardiance), another SGLT2 inhibitor that remains patent protected. The authors offer strategies for patients, clinicians, and payers to maximize savings from first-in-class generic competition in the case of dapagliflozin and similar future cases.
