Summary:

In a national study of US nursing home residents with dementia who had been taking antipsychotic medications long term, discontinuing these medications was associated with fewer hospitalizations, particularly for pneumonia and urinary tract infections, compared with continuing treatment. The findings support current recommendations to regularly reassess and discontinue long-term antipsychotic use in individuals with dementia when clinically appropriate.
